To some extent, it delivered on that promise. The game was praised for the scale of its universe, its art direction, and its striking vistas, as well as the sheer amount of content on offer. However, this enthusiasm was tempered by criticism, with many players pointing to technical issues and a perceived lack of variety. That situation may soon change, as the studio is reportedly preparing a significant update aimed at revitalizing the game.
A potential turning point for Starfield
The rumor originates from a recent episode of the Defining Duke podcast, hosted by MrMattyPlays and published earlier this week on YouTube. During the episode, the podcaster discussed Starfield’s post-launch struggles and raised the possibility of a “2.0” update, drawing parallels with Cyberpunk 2077 and the extensive improvements it received in the years following its release. According to this scenario, Bethesda would address several of the game’s shortcomings, making meaningful changes across multiple systems in order to better align the experience with player expectations.
Matty claims to have “seen it behind closed doors” during a presentation of upcoming content shown to a select group of YouTubers and content creators. No concrete details have been shared so far, which is not unusual for this type of private presentation. Adding to the speculation, another content creator mentioned the possibility of a major Starfield update back in September 2025.
As with all rumors of this nature, the information should be treated with caution. For many players, Starfield’s shortcomings are rooted in deeper structural design choices, which are far more difficult to overhaul than purely technical issues. Still, with multiple sources pointing in the same direction, the idea that Starfield could undergo a transformation reminiscent of Cyberpunk 2077 is not entirely far-fetched. We will likely have to wait several more months before learning whether these claims will materialize.
